01Start here

What do you need most right now?

Pick the one that's true today. You don't have to fix everything at once. Nobody does.

BenefitsB
SomebodyC

I need somebody who'll actually pick up.

You've been on hold. You've been told to fill out another form. A Still Serves advocate is a veteran who walks it with you — rides, paperwork, sitting in the waiting room.

02The road back

Seven steps. In order. One at a time.

This is the route most veterans take from the street to stable. It's not fast and it's not fair, but it works when somebody stays on it with you. Each step says what it is, why it matters, what to bring, and who to call.

0Tonight

Get safe, fed, and charged.

Nothing else on this page works if you're freezing or starving. Handle tonight. Then come back.

Do this

  • Call 877-424-3838. Say: "I'm a veteran and I'm homeless. I'm in Northwest Arkansas." They can place you.
  • Daytime: go to 7hills Day Center, 1832 S School Ave, Fayetteville — food, showers, a case worker who knows the VA.
  • Dial 2-1-1 for the nearest shelter, warming or cooling center, and food bank.
  • Charge your phone at any public library. Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville — all free, all have outlets and Wi-Fi.
  • Still outside tonight? Read FM 479-2 · Outside — the two-page guide to staying alive, fed, and safe on the street until we get you in.

Bring if you have it (fine if you don't)

  • Any ID — expired is okay
  • DD-214 or any paper with your service on it
  • Your Social Security number (memorized is fine)
  • Any medications you're on
Note

No papers at all? You can still get a bed tonight. Shelters and the VA can verify service later. Don't let missing paperwork stop you from calling.

1Prove it

Get your DD-214.

The DD-214 is the key that unlocks every door behind it — VA health care, housing vouchers, disability pay, pension. Lost it? Normal. Most guys have. It's replaceable and it's free.

Three ways to get it

  • Fastest: ask a County Veterans Service Officer to pull it for you — 479-444-1711 (Washington Co.) or 479-271-1013 (Benton Co.). They do this every day.
  • Online: archives.gov/veterans — the National Personnel Records Center. Free. Takes a few weeks.
  • If you have a VA.gov or DS Logon: milConnect can often download it instantly.

While you wait

  • Get a state ID at any Arkansas Revenue Office. Ask your case worker or SSVF about help with the fee.
  • Request a Social Security card replacement: 800-772-1213, or the Fayetteville SSA office 479-521-3435.
  • Set up a free email address at the library. Everything from here on sends you email.
Note

Discharge wasn't honorable? You may still qualify for a lot of this — and discharge upgrades are real. Talk to a VSO before you assume you're out.

2Get in

Enroll in VA health care.

This is the step people skip, and it's the one that matters most. Once you're enrolled, the Fayetteville VA's homeless team, mental health, substance treatment, and housing programs can all see you and work for you. Enrollment is not the same as a disability claim — you can do this today.

How

  • Walk in: Fayetteville VA Medical Center, 1100 N College Ave. Go to Eligibility & Enrollment. Say you're homeless — it moves you up.
  • Phone: 877-222-8387, Mon–Fri. Have your SSN and discharge info ready.
  • Online: VA Form 10-10EZ at va.gov/health-care/apply.

Once you're in, ask for

  • The Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) coordinator — this is your housing door.
  • A primary care appointment — meds, physicals, the C&P exam later all run through this.
  • Mental health and, if you need it, residential substance treatment — Fayetteville has an inpatient program on site.
Note

Combat veteran? The Vet Center at 1416 N College Ave (479-582-7152) will see you for counseling without VA enrollment. Separate system, no wait for eligibility.

3Housed

Get a roof that's yours.

There are three main VA housing lanes, and most veterans get told about only one. Ask for all three by name. The right one depends on your situation, not on who you happened to talk to.

The three lanes

  • HUD-VASH — a long-term housing voucher plus a VA case manager. For veterans who need ongoing support. Through the Fayetteville VA homeless program: 479-443-4301.
  • SSVF — fast money for deposits, back rent, utilities, and a case worker to find you a place. For veterans close to housed or about to lose housing. Through 7hills (479-966-4378) or the Springdale SSVF office (479-750-1062).
  • Grant & Per Diem (GPD) — transitional housing with structure, for veterans who need a few months to get steady. Ask the VA homeless coordinator which GPD beds are open.

Also in play

  • Fayetteville Housing Authority — 1 N School Ave · 479-521-3850. Ask about veteran preference.
  • 7hills Walker Community — transitional and permanent supportive units, Fayetteville.
  • Family with you? Say so loudly. SSVF is built for veteran families and prioritizes them.
Caution

Don't sign a lease you can't carry. If someone pushes you into housing with no income plan, slow down and call your advocate. Housing you lose in 90 days is worse than another month in GPD.

4Benefits

File for what you're owed. Free.

If your service left you with a bad back, bad knees, hearing loss, PTSD, sleep apnea, TBI, a burn-pit lung, or a dozen other things — the VA owes you monthly compensation, and that money changes everything downstream. The claim process is slow and picky. Here's how to not get chewed up by it.

The order that works

  • Day one: file an Intent to File (VA Form 21-0966). Takes ten minutes. It locks in your back-pay date and gives you a full year to build the real claim. A VSO can do it on the spot.
  • Get an accredited representative — free. County VSOs (479-444-1711 Washington / 479-271-1013 Benton), the DAV, VFW, or American Legion. They file, they chase, they appeal. Zero cost.
  • Get seen for every condition first. A diagnosis in your VA record is evidence. "It hurts" is not. Step 2 is why this works.
  • Show up to the C&P exam. Missing it kills the claim. Tell your advocate the date — we'll get you there.
  • Denied? Appeal. A huge share of first denials are paperwork. Your VSO files the Supplemental Claim or Higher-Level Review.

Also ask about

  • PACT Act — if you served in Iraq, Afghanistan, or near burn pits, many conditions are now presumed service-connected. Say "PACT Act" to your VSO.
  • VA Pension — if you're a wartime vet with low income and you're 65+ or disabled, this is monthly money even with no service-connected injury. Ask.
  • Aid & Attendance — extra pension if you need help with daily living.
  • Discharge upgrade — if your characterization is blocking you, VSOs and legal aid help with Discharge Review Board applications.
Warning

Never pay a "claim consultant." Anyone asking for a percentage of your back pay, a fee up front, or your VA login is a shark. Accredited reps are free by law. Check anyone at va.gov/ogc/apps/accreditation.

5Income

Build an income that holds.

A disability check can take months. You need something that lands sooner, and something that lasts longer. Stack them.

Sooner

  • Arkansas Workforce Center — ask for the veterans employment rep (DVOP). Fayetteville 479-521-5730 · Rogers 479-636-4755. Priority of service is the law for vets.
  • SNAP (food stamps) & Medicaid — Arkansas DHS, or dial 2-1-1. Apply the same week.
  • Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) — job training and placement built for homeless vets. Ask the Workforce Center or the VA homeless team who runs it locally.

Longer

  • Social Security Disability (SSDI/SSI) — separate from VA, and you can draw both. 800-772-1213 · Fayetteville office 479-521-3435.
  • VR&E (Chapter 31) — if you're service-connected, the VA will pay for school or trade training plus a monthly stipend. Our founder is in it right now at NWACC. It's real.
  • GI Bill — if you have it, it includes a housing allowance while you're in school.
6Head & body

Deal with the stuff you've been carrying.

Most veterans who end up on the street are carrying something — PTSD, a drinking problem, a charge from a bad night, a divorce. None of it disqualifies you. All of it has a door.

Doors

  • Fayetteville Vet Center — 479-582-7152. Counseling by people who've deployed. Confidential, separate from your VA medical record.
  • VA Mental Health & Substance Treatment — through 479-443-4301. Residential program on site in Fayetteville.
  • Legal trouble? Ask the VA for Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO). Washington County runs a Veterans Treatment Court — a path through charges instead of a jail cell.
  • Civil legal help (evictions, child support, licenses, benefits denials) — Legal Aid of Arkansas 800-952-9243.

Plain truth

  • You don't have to be sober to get a bed. HUD-VASH is housing first.
  • You don't have to "be ready to talk" to walk into the Vet Center. You can just sit there.
  • If you're thinking about ending it: 988, press 1. Or text 838255. Somebody who gets it, right now.
7Standing

Stay standing. Then hold the door.

Stable isn't a finish line; it's a thing you maintain. Still Serves advocates keep checking in after the crisis — rides to appointments, a call before the C&P exam, somebody to notice if you go quiet. And when you're steady, you come back for the next one. That's the whole model.

What keeps people housed

  • One person who calls you every week. We'll be that if nobody else is.
  • A budget that survives the first missed check. Your SSVF or VASH case manager helps build it.
  • Something to do. Work, school, or showing up Saturday to help us clear storm debris.

Then

  • You know the road now. Walk the next guy down it.
  • Become a Still Serves advocate. You're the most qualified person in this county for the job.
Note

"Still Serves" isn't about us helping you. It's about the fact that you still serve. You just needed a hand getting back on your feet to do it.

04Still Serves advocates

The system is slow.
We're not.

Phone trees. Lost paperwork. Denied for a missing signature. Waitlists that outlast people. We know — we've been on hold too. The VA still owns the housing vouchers and pays the checks, so we don't replace it. We stand next to you and make it work.

01

We answer.

A veteran calls you back. Not a bot, not a voicemail box that's full.

02

We show up.

We'll drive you to the VA, sit in the waiting room, and go into the appointment if you want us there.

03

We don't let go.

Weekly check-ins until you're housed, enrolled, and your claim is moving. Then we keep checking.

What an advocate actually does

  • Sits down with you and maps your personal version of the seven steps.
  • Makes the calls with you on speaker, so you're not alone on hold.
  • Gets you to the County VSO and makes sure the Intent to File goes in that day.
  • Rides. To the VA, the Workforce Center, the SSA office, the C&P exam.
  • Keeps the folder — copies of everything you've filed, so nothing gets "lost" twice.
  • Escalates. When a case stalls, we call the coordinator, the VSO director, the congressional office. Politely. Repeatedly.

Advocates are volunteers — mostly veterans, some not. We are not lawyers, VA employees, or accredited claims agents. We get you to the people who are, and we make sure they do their job.

Request an advocate

Goes straight to Still Serves volunteers. We don't share it with the VA, the county, or anyone else without asking you first. If you're a danger to yourself tonight, don't wait on this form — dial 988 and press 1.

Received

A veteran will reach out.
You already did the hard part.

05Helping a veteran

You found one.
Here's what to do.

For family, friends, pastors, officers, nurses, librarians, landlords — anyone standing in front of a veteran who's in trouble and doesn't know where to start.

In the moment

  • Ask. "Did you serve?" Most won't volunteer it. Many were told they don't qualify for anything. They usually do.
  • If they're in crisis: dial 988, press 1, together. Stay with them.
  • If they need a bed tonight: call 877-424-3838 on speaker. Say you're with a homeless veteran in Northwest Arkansas.
  • Hand them this page. stillserves.org works on any phone. Or print the pocket card below.

After

  • Request an advocate for them using the form above — with their permission. We'll take it from there.
  • Don't try to run their claim yourself. Get them to a County VSO. It's free and it's the thing that works.
  • Family member? SSVF serves veteran families, and the Vet Center counsels families too. Ask for yourself.
  • Case worker or clinician? Email help@stillserves.org — we'll coordinate so the vet isn't retelling their story six times.

Become an advocate.

We need veterans who remember what the first 90 days out felt like, and civilians who have a truck, a free Tuesday, or a stubborn streak. You don't need credentials. You need to pick up the phone and show up when you said you would.

Advocates get a short orientation on how the VA, SSVF, and the county offices actually work, a folder of forms, and a veteran to walk with. Most advocates carry one or two people at a time.

Especially wanted

Lawyers, nurses, social workers, and accredited VSOs who can give a few hours a month. Say so in the form.

Advocate sign-on

We'll follow up within a few days with orientation details.

Welcome to the unit.
We'll be in touch.

06Why this exists

Built by somebody who's been through the machine.

Justin
Kelsey
Founder · Combat veteran · Springdale, Arkansas

Justin Kelsey spent ten years in the U.S. Army. He was a truck gunner in Operation Iraqi Freedom, pulled security under Operation Noble Eagle, and during Joint Task Force Katrina led logistics and search-and-rescue operations while guarding millions of dollars in relief supplies for people who had lost everything.

He came home with two Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medals, Global War on Terrorism decorations — and the same thing most of us came home with: a VA system that is enormous, well-funded, and almost impossible to navigate alone. He has watched good soldiers lose years to a denied claim, a missed appointment, a form nobody told them about. Some of them lost more than years.

Still Serves is his answer. Not a replacement for the VA — a veteran standing next to you while you deal with it. Katrina taught him that the difference between a disaster and a recovery is usually one person with a plan who refuses to leave.
